On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, individuals and organisations across Europe will unite for World Obesity Day Europe, a pivotal event dedicated to raising awareness about the escalating obesity epidemic and advocating for improved prevention and treatment strategies. This initiative, led by the European Coalition for People Living with Obesity (ECPO), aligns with the global World Obesity Day campaign and emphasises the theme “Addressing Obesity Together.”
As you will see from reading the pages of Obesity: The Big Truth, obesity is a complex, chronic, and relapsing disease that serves as a gateway to numerous non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, liver disease, chronic kidney disease, and at least 13 types of cancer.
In the World Health Organization (WHO) European Region, the estimated 66% of the adult population currently (2025) living with overweight or obesity is expected to rise to over 77% of the adult population in the region in 2035 unless there is significant intervention.
World Obesity Day Europe serves as a platform to foster collaboration among healthcare providers, policymakers, patient organisations, and the general public. The 2025 campaign will feature a diverse array of events and initiatives.
A significant highlight of this year’s World Obesity Day Europe is a discussion “Gateway to Better Health: The Case for Coordinated EU Action on Obesity”, scheduled in the European Parliament in Brussels. Hosted by MEP Laurent Castillo and organised by the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO), this event will feature ECPO representatives Vicki Mooney and Susie Birney, who will advocate for cohesive EU policies addressing obesity. They will also draw attention to the Science highlighted on the Obesity: The Big Truth website.
